Interesting
Technologies at TechEd
I've seen several very interesting technologies here at TechEd.
Some new, some new to me, some updates... I thought I'd list
a couple of the more intriguing, more "buzz-worthy" here -
perhaps they'll be of help to you as well.
XPrime - This is a pretty
cool looking solution to heavy read-based SQL Server applications.
They've built an appliance that is highly optimized for serving
your applications and vastly improving query response times.
The appliance, which is scalable in a big way, provides a data
caching approach to your data - basically if you imagine all
of your data in RAM - that makes the query resolution and data
return times incredibly fast. Just the standard testing query
I watched showed a duplicate SQL Server front end comparison
- one talking to native SQL Server, one talking to the caching
and performance solution. The SQL Server query took more than
5 minutes to complete, the optimized query took just over 1
minute. Nice. They have all sorts of case-study data to convey
- we'll be working up a full review as well - but take a look
if you have reporting- or query-intensive applications that
could use some help.
O'Reilly Books - O'Reilly
is coming out with some new books that will be a kind of "Rapid" guide.
These look really promising - and very much to the point. For
example they are talking about a "Differences between SQL 2000
and Yukon" book - and more. Can't wait to get our hands on
these and see if they're all we expect them to be. With O'Reilly
behind them, we're optimistic that they'll be simply outstanding.

SoftArtisans - they
have some nice looking add-ins for Reporting Services
that will help export those reports in additional formats.
This includes being able to produce Excel and Word documents
from Reporting Services, complete with macros, formatting
and other features, rather than just a standard XLS export.

Justanobservation - Wireless everywhere - one nice
thing that was done at the show is the use of pervasive wireless
connectivity support. Amazing. It was actually a bit funny
- the new "water cooler" is the wireless antenna. Everywhere
you'd see these standards with the wireless access points on
them. You'll also see a group of people sitting around them,
on the floor, at tables, against the wall, whatever - all looking
for a great connection (and typically getting it). It was really
outstanding connectivity that was provided for attendees.
